Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Colander (for draining pasta)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cheese grater (if shredding cheese yourself)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 ½ cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente (usually about 7-8 minutes). Drain and set aside.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly, until the mixture becomes slightly golden and bubbly. This cooks out the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the dry mustard powder and salt. Continue cooking and whisking until the sauce thickens and starts to bubble gently, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Remove the sauce from heat and stir in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth. Add the cooked elbow macaroni into the cheese sauce and stir gently until all pasta is evenly coated.
  • Serve the creamy mac and cheese hot. Optional: garnish with a sprinkle of extra cheese or paprika.

Notes

2. Adjust for Dietary Needs: For a gluten-free version, simply swap out the elbow macaroni for gluten-free pasta. You can also use dairy-free cheese and milk for a vegan version.
3. Seasoning Adjustments: Feel free to adjust the seasoning to your liking. Add more salt or pepper if you prefer a bolder flavor, or try adding herbs like thyme or rosemary for a unique twist.
